This is a very well researched history of the Maybrick case looking in particular at the position of middle class women at the time Florence was a young American and her English husband was many years older The marriage was under strain with infidelities and financial mismanagement on both sides This book doesn t really answer the uestion of the title and despite all the details it is not clear whether James Maybrick died of poisoning at all other than the effect of long term substance abuse he having been in the habit of taking all kinds of strange things including arsenic for years Very interesting on the double standards of the day terribly shocking for a married woman to have had a fling and a dirty weekend in London fine for a married man to keep a mistress and give his wife a black eye The impression one has is that even at the time it was acknowledged that the trial and in particular the judge s summing up was flawed ueen Victoria doesn t come out of this too well either The only thing which jarred a bit was the fictionalised swishing of skirts and crying of seagulls and so on all plausible but it makes the tone of the book a little inconsistent Thrill Me Do Not Disturb for his demise Historian Kate Coluhoun recounts an utterly absorbing tale of addiction deception and adultery that keeps you asking to the very last page did she kill him.
